Recently, Neo-Cabaret music is rising. So many bands, singers, dancers perform this kind of music. There are millions of boring groups and singers. Although I like classical style of cabaret music, I will introduce a neo cabaret group. It is Vagabond Opera from the United States, Oregon. Their music is really original, fluent, and likeable.
Eric Stern has founded the group in the beginning of 2000’s. He was trained in Europe that his musical background is opera. Sometimes, cabaret and opera words could be heard as boring. However, this group brings new understanding to cabaret music. Their music is combined with some kind of Eastern Europe music such as Klezmer, Russian and Ukrainian folk, gypsy music, and some Oriental items. Their music also contains some kinds of modern styles like Jazz, Swing and Tango.
The group’s vocal lineup is highly rich and interesting. There are four vocals, and some of them were trained as tenor and soprano. And musical lineup is as interesting as vocal lineup. There are accordion, tenor saxophone, clarinet, cellos, contrabass, and drum performers. Sometimes, we can see some guest dancers and musicians.
Vagabond Opera’s website is very good. You could listen many of songs, listen their live performance, and buy their albums. http://vagabondopera.com/. To visit the website is highly recommended.
They have released four studio albums. Get on the Train is their first album and released in 2003. Go to the group’s website and listen Reine de la Rocca, Leyla and Chaplin Nonsense Song and Bei Mir Bist du Schone. You have an idea about Vagabond Opera’s music now. I hope you enjoyed by funny songs, and feel better after some romantic songs. Second album was released in 2006. The album’s name is Vagabond Opera. Description of this album is more Eastern Europe and more Orientalism. Hijazz is their Arabic song. The Transformation into Marlene shows their Marlene Dietrich passion. Svi Te Terren is a Balkan folk song called as Hederlezi. Manayunk, Ich Hob Dikh Tsu Ful Lib, and Merci Django songs are successful songs in this album. The Zeitgeist Beckons album was released in 2009. This album is one of the best album of the group. It is highly recommended. New Year’s Eve in a Haunted House, Welcome to the Opera, Russian Jazz Waltz, Ganef, Tango til, They are Sore and Goodnight Moon are fascinating songs in the album. In this year, Sing For Your Lives album was released. I can say that it is a gypsymusic based album. It is fascinating and fluent album. All songs are very good. It is one the most listenable album of the group. Spirit Dances Evermore, King of the Gypsies, Sing For Your Lives, and Beard and Moustache songs must be listened. Finally, I can say Vagabond Opera is one of the best groups in Neo Cabaret Music. Using different features make their music likeable and fascinating. Please visit their website and listen their songs. Do not forget to buy their albums to support the group.
I hope you know Emir Kusturica from his movies. Actually, I believe that Emir Kusturica means music. We will discover his magical music world and know more about Balkan Music. I can say there are three directors who choose soundtracks perfectly. Who are they? You are right that they are Quentin Tarantino, Stanley Kubrick, and Emir Kusturica. Emir is a bit different from the others. He makes his soundtracks himself. I want to talk about Emir’s funny band in this article. It is Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra that it will be called as TNSO from now on.
TNSO was a rock band in former Yugoslavia named in Zabranjeno Pusenje. Emir used to play bass and guitar in this band. Actually, it was an ordinary rock band in 80’s, but vocalist Nelle Karajilic and Emir Kusturica made the band as a jam band. We can watch their funny live sessions from their DVD's. The group consists of 12 persons and some dancers. Emir plays bass and Emir’s son Stribor plays drums.
When we talked about Emir Kusturica movies and soundtracks, we remembered Goran Bregovic. Underground and Time of Gypsies soundtracks are masterpieces of Goran. In 1998, Emir’s new movie Black Cat, White Cat was released and we met TNSO. We expected a Goran Bregovic album, but Emir used his own very colorful and funny band. We can say Black Cat, White Cat is a Balkan Music album but it’s not a typical Balkan album or world music album like all TNSO albums. You can find everything in this music from Rock to Techno. Local music is combined with modern world music perfectly. For example, Daddy, Don't Ever Dye on a Friday is a typical Balkan song at the same time it’s a rock song. Black Cat White Cat, Bubamara and Duj Sandle are fascinating songs in this album.
In the beginning of millennium, the No Smoking Orchestra released new album named in Unza Unza Time. It is a good suggestion to understand their music. I can say that it is a masterpiece. Unza Unza Time, Devil in the Business Class, Pit-bull Terrier and Drang Nach Osten songs must be listened. You will never feel regret because of listening this album.
TNSO did not make any album for four years. In 2004, Emir’s new movie, When Life Was a Miracle had been shown. So, we missed TNSO and heard them in this movie. Their music is getting mature year by year. This soundtrack album is also suggested. Actually all albums are suggested. Because, you feel very good when, you hear their music. Anyway, let’s see some suggestion from this album. You can find their video clips on some video websites. Wanted Man, Who Killed the DJ, When Life is a Miracle, and Moldovian songs are extremely suggested songs. In 2005, they also released this album as a live album. You should watch it to hear funny songs and see colorful live show.
In 2007, TNSO released their one of the best of albums Punk OperaTime of the Gypsies. I cannot find any words to describe this album. They really carried Balkan Music to a new platform. Some songs in Time of Gypsies Soundtrack are rearranged and released in this album together with some new songs. A big orchestra plays with TNSO. It is a perfect Balkan opera. Lorenzo, Evropa, Hederlezi, and Perhan Sovel songs are suggested. At least listen them on a video website. This album also released as DVD. You will see a theatre and opera at the same time. Beautiful songs, significant lyrics, wonderful shows, and interesting dances will fascinate you in the DVD.
They also have a Best Of album. Maybe, it could be a good choice to understand their music. Give an opportunity to TNSO. You will never feel regret to listen them. They deserve your interest. Buy their albums to support. I believe that TNSO will make reputable albums and shows. You could visit TNSO’s website link has given below. You could get more information about TNSO andEmir Kusturica.

New York City artist, Brian Mackey has not only broken the mold of a typical singer/songwriter, he's smashed it to bits and thrown the dust into the ears of the listener, to create a new sound that captivates the soul.
His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic and Synth-driven up-tempo Indie rock, with a hint of Americana. Originally from a tin roof town on the Northern Florida/Georgia border, his songs reflect life experiences, meshed with new found freedoms in NYC.
Day Dawns is a truly exceptional debut album from Melissa James, a singer-songwriter who has already been causing a stir at her live shows and attracting a steady stream of followers, entranced by her earthy, soulful sound.
Fusing her love of blues, folk, jazz and soul, Melissa’s songs take the listener on mini detours, which often open up to reveal the sometimes raw elements of her innermost thoughts. Combined with the velvety power of her delivery, it makes for a spine tingling experience.
Melissa first began singing seriously whilst at university. In between lectures and seminars, she’d listen intently to recordings by Bessie Smith, Holiday and Simone and ponder the lyrics of singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. Mentally, she’d take notes before putting into practice what she’d learned in her slot at a Sunday night jam.
Encouraged by her vocal coach to start songwriting, an advertisement put her in touch with her writing partner, Ross Lorraine. In very little time, they completed three songs, one of which – I Miss You – is one of their strongest collaborations. “I wrote it late at night and the lyrics, melody and some of the harmony ideas came quickly, says Melissa. It felt like this song had been waiting to be born. Once we’d finished working on it, I knew it was special. And that was when the penny dropped and I thought that Ross and I could actually make a great partnership.”
Three years on, the album Day Dawns has emerged. It embraces all of Melissa’s musical influences – Little Caged Bird is catchy soulful-pop and tells the metaphorical tale of a bird realising its dream. The soulful and gospel-tinged I Need You Here speaks of missing a lost love and the country and folk-influenced Long Road Travelled details a journey in self-discovery. Her gutsy version of Eric Bibb’s song Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down is one of two covers featured on the album.
A number of live dates are currently being scheduled for the summer months and there will be a very special live launch of Day Dawns at The Green Note, Camden, London on Thursday 21st June – the summer solstice. Appropriate, as Day Dawns charts the story of a turning of time, a new chapter and another beginning.
“They don’t write ‘em like that anymore…. except they do…. Superb…singer in classic mould” - (Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music on I Need You Here from Day Dawns)

Throwing Gravity just finished their first album. For the third time. It is often said that "the third time is a charm", and for Throwing Gravity, that is precisely the expectation.
In the fall of 2009, under their original name, The Rust, the band hit the road in promotion of their debut record - the first version that is - entitled "Anticipation". Touring the House of Blues circuit in support of Secondhand Serenade & Parachute, the group traveled across the entirety of the continental U.S. and a portion of Canada, winning over fans night after night with rock and roll anthems and the live show to back them up. Routing the group to territory previously unknown, the tour ultimately landed the quintet in Los Angeles, and as fate would have it, right into the lap of industry legend Jason Flom, credited with discovering Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, Matchbox Twenty and Kid Rock, in addition to a host of other highly successful acts.
After viewing the band's showcase at the world-famous Viper Room, Flom signed the band to his newly-reformed Lava Records, doing business as a subsidiary of Universal Republic. All the hard work it seemed, had finally paid off - Throwing Gravity (to be) had finally landed the coveted "major label deal".
Upon signing their contract with Lava/Universal in December 2009 and officially changing their name from The Rust to Throwing Gravity, the band was pushed right into the studio on January 1st, 2010 to begin the recording process for what would become "Wake Up", the group's (official) debut release. Featuring production and mixing from the likes of Chris Lord-Alge (Shinedown, Daughtry, Paramore), Ryan Williams (30 Seconds to Mars, 3 Doors Down, Outkast), Josh Abraham (Staind, Velvet Revolver, Limp Bizkit) and Jon King (Augustana, Future Leaders of the World, 3 Pill Morning), "Wake Up" included several new songs in addition to a collection of re-recorded songs from "Anticipation", the bands original first record.
"Wake Up" was completed in the spring of 2010, and with masters in hand and multiplatinum team in place - production, mixing, legal, booking, management and label - the stage was set for what the members of Throwing Gravity planned to be the biggest year of their lives. But plans don't always work out. For the better part of eight months, Throwing Gravity sat at home in Nashville, TN and waited. And waited. And waited. As time slowly dragged on, filled with unreturned phone calls, album release dates getting pushed back and tours falling through, it became increasingly clear that "the dream" was falling apart. And in late 2010, the dreaded phone call that everyone feared was on its way, finally came - Throwing Gravity was released from their contract with Lava/Universal Republic Records. And to make matters worse, their record - a product of countless hours of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, and lined with a slew of heavy-hitting industry names - was shelved, never to see the light of day.
By the end of 2010, the year that was so promising a mere 12 months earlier, Throwing Gravity was left with nothing. No record. No album. No money. A roller coaster ride leading straight back to square one.
After the inevitable period of mourning finally passed, Throwing Gravity decided to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and get back in the studio with friend and producer Jon King to record their first album yet again - for the third time. Armed with only the best songs from "Wake Up" and comprised predominately of new material, Throwing Gravity's official debut record, "It's Not the End", is an audible masterpiece. Fueled by hard-hitting drums and burning guitar riffs on songs like "Circles" and "Stop", layered with undeniable melodies and powerful lyrical content a la "Best Time" and "Given Up on Giving Up on You" and featuring the songs that have stood the test of time - "Wake Up", "Missing You" and "Here We Go Again" - "It's Not the End" is sure keep you listening from start to finish.
They say the third time's a charm, and for the members of Throwing Gravity - Nick James (lead vocals/guitar), Jesse Triplett (lead guitar), Sam Hindmarsh (bass), Chris Scott (keys) and Tom DuPree III (drums) - that is precisely the expectation. And regardless of all the highs and lows that have occurred, the quintet's mentality is no better expressed than through the title of their record. "It's Not the End" proves that Throwing Gravity is in it for the long haul, and this time around, they're playing for keeps. Suffice it to say, Throwing Gravity is just getting started
The Unsatisfied raw, high energy, rock & roll meets dangerous punk rock with precision. A complete package; a genuine American punk act with so much energy & spectacle on stage it's like being hit by a rock and roll lighting bolt.
Out of the frustrated underground punk culture of the South, comes The Unsatisfied. Front-man Eric Scealf started the group in 1986. Weathering years of personnel issues, equipment breakdowns and the ever changing music business, they are better than ever. They’re like a well-oiled machine that explodes on to the stage in the tradition of The Who, The Cramps, and The Ramones. This is the music your momma warned you about.
This true blood and glitter operation has toured for many years across the southeast and beyond, sharing the stage with such luminaries as the Misfits, Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls), Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys), Dave Brockie Experience (GWAR), The Murder Junkies, Superdrag, Asphalt Blaster, Georgia Satellites, and Nashville Pussy. Even touring multiple times with HBO’s Real Sex most dangerous rock band, The Impotent Sea Snakes. Playing everywhere from the hallowed stage of CBGB’s in New York, to performing at southern skate parks for underage fans, The Unsatisfied always serves up healthy portions of faith and fire for punk rock aficionados.
"Songs the Belt Taught Us" is the newest CD from The Unsatisfied. It was recorded at Revolution Sound with Mike Pack engineering and helping the band produce and finished at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA with mixing by David Barbe (Bob Mould, DriveByTruckers) and mastering by Drew Vandenberg (WidespreadPanic, DriveByTruckers). It was released April 27th 2011. It has since been lauded by reviewers nation wide as one of the "best albums of the year...". "Songs the Belt Taught Us" is also featured on Pandora.
The Unsatisfied is not your average rock band. They may be hard, but they’re more rhythmic than James Brown and embody the sensuality of Prince. It’s punk rock infused with jazz beats and sexual angst, you owe it to yourself to see The Unsatisfied live. Prepare yourself for the Southern music scene's most whispered dirty secret, The Unsatisfied…
