BIO: Tired Pony

Formed by Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody as an outlet for his fascination with country music, Tired Pony began taking shape in May 2009. By October, the solo project had grown into a full-fledged supergroup featuring another Snow Patrol veteran, Iain Archer, his wife Miriam Kaufmann, producer/musician Jacknife Lee, Belle & Sebastian percussionist Richard Colburn, auxiliary R.E.M. member Scott McCaughey, and Troy Stewart. Peter Buck joined several months later, and Tired Pony traveled to Portland in early 2010 to record the a debut album. Featuring guest appearances by Zooey Deschanel, M. Ward, and Editors frontman Tom Smith, The Place We Ran From was finished in one week and released later that year.

Perry, Georgia, USA (2009 – present)

Washed Out is Ernest Greene, a young guy from Perry, Georgia, USA who makes bedroom synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard.

There’s a sense of longing and distance in Greene’s somber, filtered vocals, but it’s what he does compositionally that makes Washed Out stand out. Backed by gently pulsing, Balearic-tinged disco, Greene’s voice takes on a new dimension. Reminiscent of groups like The Glass and Chromatics, Washed Out is the music to end your night with, when the city is quiet and you’ve got a long walk home ahead of you.

THE WAKING SLEEP

Soon after finishing her acclaimed 2008 album Apple Tree, Colorado-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Katie Herzig received a fateful phone call. "I sat down to paint one day—I hadn't painted in years—then I got a call asking me to write a song for the Sex and the City movie," she says. "So I put down my paintbrush and haven’t painted since!"

What she did instead, as one assignment led to another, was write music for numerous films and television shows, and in the process, find a surprising and exciting direction for her new album, The Waking Sleep, her first release on Downtown/Mercer Street Records. "I was trying new things," says Herzig, "getting outside of what I would normally do as an artist. It was really fun and invigorating to use samples and build tracks digitally. I loved creating like that, and it really allowed me more freedom, because I was doing something less personal, and creating for something else."

But there was also no doubt that at some point, this accomplished artist would return to the distinctive, heartfelt material that made her name. After initially fronting the Colorado-based band Newcomers Home, Herzig released her solo debut, Watch Them Fall, in 2004, followed by Weightless two years later. When she relocated to Nashville, she immediately started to catch the attention of her fellow artists and was invited to perform as part of the remarkable new talent showcased on the Hotel Café and Ten Out of Tenn tours.

As rewarding as the soundtrack work could be, there was another kind of work to be done. "I knew I'd have to get back to writing for me," she says. "I was kind of intimidated by it, but I knew a lot would come out. I do remember saying, though, I thought I might make a really mellow, stripped-down record."

It wouldn't have been a surprise for Herzig to go that direction. After all, her last release was Live in Studio: Acoustic Trio, a bare-bones 2009 re-imagining of some of her material. But there's another side of her musical interests that came to the fore instead.

"I just love bands, and I found myself making a record that felt like that. I was listening to lots of Coldplay, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend..." she says. Herzig and producer Cason Cooley were also especially taken with film composers Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, Brokeback Mountain) and Mark Mothersbaugh who also influenced their thinking.

Herzig knew that she wanted to work with one producer and write a batch of songs that were specifically intended for a new album. Eventually, "The Waking Sleep" emerged as the project's initial composition. "It felt like the first personal song I'd written in a long time," she says. "That got the ball rolling, and felt like it might be the beginning of something."

"Wasting Time" followed soon after, written on a ukulele borrowed from one of Herzig's bandmates. As she and Cooley began to develop these songs, a new process and a new sound were surfacing. "I recorded a lot of these songs at my home studio and started to build tracks as I wrote them," she says. "It was very experimental and not rushed. Before I did all the film and tv stuff I would mostly just write songs on my guitar, now I was building tracks and writing songs within them."

The Waking Sleep was constructed over a full year of work, as Herzig continued to tour on her own and open for Brandi Carlile across the US. "I recorded whenever I was home, and each time it felt like it was a different season of the record," she says. Songs like "Make A Noise" and "Midnight Serenade" represented uncharted territory for Herzig, with skittery rhythms and multiple movements. By combining digitally programmed sounds with organic instruments, she was finding a fresh musical identity.

The song "Way To The Future" came suddenly, at the end of a session, when Cooley played Herzig a drum loop he wasn't sure what to do with. "I sat down and started playing this string sample against it," she says. "I was about to leave, but I stayed and we just wrote the song- it was really fast and fluky."

Herzig knew that these songs would present a new kind of challenge for her on stage, since she'll follow up the album's release with a headlining tour, as well as another run on the Ten Out of Tenn tour. Speaking a few days after her first live performance of five songs from The Waking Sleep, she says that "it felt like I was playing my first show—a whole different energy, like we were a different band."

In addition to the changes that The Waking Sleep represent in her sound, Herzig also found that the lyrics of her new songs were moving into new areas. "These songs are less relationship-driven," she says. "Of course, there's still some of that but the key songs—"The Waking Sleep," "Make a Noise," "Way to the Future," "Free My Mind"—all raise bigger questions about things going on in the world. Like a lot of people, I've felt constantly overwhelmed by the state of the world, and finding myself asking how it will work out and how we can help solve things."

With The Waking Sleep, Katie Herzig displays maturity and creative fearlessness that extend far beyond her previous work. She knew the risks involved, and knew that breakthroughs only come from having the confidence to believe in your instincts. "I was afraid that all I wanted to write about was global warming and the economy," she says, "and I don't really know how to write about those things. But I just needed to raise questions. I see all these things happening around me, what can I do about them?

"On some songs, I don't even know what I'm writing about," Herzig concludes. "But it feels like exactly what I need to say."

Armenian Navy Band: Arto Tuncboyaciyan’s World Music Project

Have you ever heard anything about Arto Tuncboyaciyan? He is an Arnmenian multi instrumentalist musician, composer, songwriter, and producer. I could say he is folk, ethno jazz and world music master. I would like to write more about Arto Tuncboyaciyan. Today, we will know more about one of his projects Armenian Navy Band. You could suppose that the group is a military chorus like Red Army Chorus. There is neither sea nor navy in Armenia. It is an interesting irony. If you like ethno jazz and world music merged with local elements, Armenian Navy Band will satisfy your expectations from this kind of music. Arto Tuncboyaciyan is very famous composer, songwriter and producer on the world. He and his brother Onno Tunc is also high reputed musicians in Turkey. Arto Tuncboyaciyan was involved in many projects with famous groups and artists like Al Di Meola and Haris Alexiou. He is also multi-instrumentalist musician that he is able to play almost all types of percussions. He also plays sazebo which is a six stringed traditional instrument.

Armenian Navy Band is an Arto Tuncboyaciyan project that he found the group after he met with an Armenian musician/pianist Vahagn Hayrapetyan during his Armenia visit. The band consists of twelve Armenian musicians with wide range of instrument variety. Some of Armenian and Turkish traditional instruments like kanun, kemanche, blul, duduk, zurna, and percussions and some of modern music elements like guitar, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum, piano and keyboard are played in Armenian Navy Band. Blul and Duduk is Armenian traditional wind instruments that sound is peaceful.

Armenian Navy Band performs ethno jazz music with Armenian and Anatolian elements. They have fully traditional songs, jazz songs, and songs fusing modern and traditional elements. You also could find Funk elements in their songs. They are very successful to create unique melodies and to fuse Armenian and Anatolian elements to contemporary world music. Instrumental variety and traditional instruments load feelings to their music. Almost all songs were composed by Arto Tuncboyaciyan.

Armenian Navy Band’s debut album was released in 1999 named in Bzdik Zinvor. Although studio techniques are a bit poor, it is a very successful debut album. In 2001, New Apricot album was released in Istanbul. There are some nice songs in Turkish language. Natural Seeds album was released in 2004. The band made How Much is Yours album in 2005. Finally, Under Your Thoughts album was released in 2009.

Natural Seeds album is a good album to introduction to Armenian Navy Band. It is technically perfect album and contains more modern elements. Ocean, Fire and Air are my highlighted songs for you. Apricot and How Much is Yours albums should be listened. Let's Not Become a Copy from a Copy, Kef Kef (Celebration) and Oleaman from Natural Seeds are my favorites. New Apricot is also appreciated album. Don’t lose it.

Chingon: Latin Rock, Robert Rodriguez Soundtracks, and Mexico

Ah! Think about a person, a film director who is also musician. He is a reputed director and his soundtracks are impressive. When I think about a person like that, when I think about soundtracks, I always remember Emir Kusturica, Tony Gatlif and Quentin Tarantino. You could read about my article about Emir Kusturica to discover his musical world. Today, we will add one more person whose soundtracks are made by him, and his musicality is extremely high. I am talking about Robert Rodriguez. Everybody knows some movies like Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Planet Terror, and Sin City. Robert Rodriguez directed all of those movies. We also remember those movies from their tasty soundtracks. Robert Rodriguez is also a guitarist that he makes his soundtracks himself. You should listen to Cherry’s Dance of Death song from his Planet Terror movie. You will fall in love with this song and listen it continuously, if you like rock. He formed a band named in Chingon together with a Latin rock group. We will review Chingon and its album today.

Chingon was a Latin rock group named in Del Castillo before they play together with Robert Rodriguez. Chingon joined some Robert Rodriguez soundtrack projects and made some songs for his movies. They made Siente Mi Amor vocalized by Salma Hayek in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. We also remember Chingon from Malaguena Salerosa song in Kill Bill movie’s second part. The song is a Bolero that performed by many famous singer and groups. You should listen to this version. Maybe it is one of the best.

In 2004, Robert Rodriguez joined the group and the groups name transformed into Chingon from Del Castillo. The band released its debut album in the same year. The album’s name is Mexican Spaghetti Western. Some soundtrack items and new songs were played successfully in this album. Some guest performers also joined the album project. Makis Ablianitis: Greek Jazz and New Age Composer

New years’ first article is written for a nice Jazz man and world music expert Makis Ablianitis from Greece. He makes the Greek music excellent with Indian and Far East melodies. If I say New Age, everybody says Vangelis from Greece. However, there are so many listenable musicians in our neighbor Greece. One of them is Makis Ablianitis. He is a jazz guitarist who met with guitar when he was young, and educated in the United States. He had some jazz projects, but his New Age and world music identity is known better than his jazz identity. Although he has a solo career, he also worked with famous ethnic music artists like Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Michalis Nikoloudis.

He formed his own jazz band in 1995. Between 1995 and 1998, he also joined some ethnic music projects as a member with names I told above paragraph. His debut album Flame Keeper was released in 1996. It is a typical jazz album that you could hear his ability on guitar. The real Makis Ablianitis music has started in 2000 with the album named in Bahar. He worked with famous Indian flute player Hariprasad Chaurasia and Manolis Lidakis who is well-known and reputed singer in Greece. The album combined Greek Music with Indian and Far East music. Dragan Dautovski who is a kaval and gajda virtuoso from Macedonia (FYROM) and some oud and kanun players also joined the project. It is a very good multi instrument project. Love Secret, Eternal Song and Bahar are my favorite song in this album. It is an highly recommended album that makes you feel very good with his multicultural music.

Makis Ablianitis also formed a collateral trio band with two Greek jazz/blues people. The collateral band name is Hot Organic Trio and the band played cover songs with only guitar, Hammond organ and drum. He toured Greece, Macedonia and Turkey. He recorded songs from Bahar album and made some new songs for his album Bahar Live Under the Sky. He worked with famous musicians and performers in this album. Normally, live albums are not good albums to get to know a musician, but this album erases all cliché understanding about music. It is very good album to know his musical background. This album is extremely suggested album that you will fall in love with Love Secret song. All songs are very successful and fascinating but Love Secret is really a special song. Buy the album and listen it! The song will impress you.

In 2008, he released his new album Kismet. Makis Ablianitis also worked with reputed musicians and composers from Greece and closer countries including Dragan Dautovski from Macedonia. His band Dragan Dautovski Quartet is also very nice band to listen. Please, check from Google. His music gets mature day by day. This album is also extremely suggested album that Baba trilogy will make you feel good. Kismet is also very nice song.
