About: Withnailus

I've been making music for many years now and, over these years, I've found my own style. I know I'll never sell millions - to be honest it's never been about that. I love what I do, it's my passion in life, and it keeps one relatively sane. Don't get me wrong, if I could make a living from it, I wouldn't say no. My big dream has always been to make one album like a "Dark side of the moon" and then disappear to a life of royalties and rumours.

Ari Hest

About: Ari Hest

On the L train heading East in New York City, Ari Hest is surrounded by business people, kids heading home from school, and foreigners looking at subway maps. Ari has his phone up to his mouth and he's singing jibberish into the receiver. After a few seconds he stops, puts the phone down, and says, "Sorry, needed to get that outta my system."

And I believe him. Hest doesn't so much play music as it flows through him. He explains, "No matter what I'm doing, aside from sleeping, there's a soundtrack to it. It's a blessing and a curse, as it drives some people in my life nuts occasionally, but it's how I've been and always will be."

Music is Hest's unparalleled passion, one that's seen him create at an astounding pace since he began writing songs in his late teens. Aside from the hundreds of melody snippets swimming around in his iPhone recorder, Ari has hundreds more on his home computer. And then there's the six albums, three EPs, and "52" in 2008, an innovative project whereby he wrote, recorded and released a new song every Monday for a full year. There's also educational music he's written for kids and as he puts it, "songs I write with others in mind to sing them."

And now, Ari is ready to release his seventh full length, The Fire Plays. Never has he put forth an album as cohesive and rife with personality. From producer Gerry Leonard's hypnotic, ambient guitar on the gripping album starter, "Untitled Part 2" to the final strum of the heartbreaking finale, "Something To Look Forward To," you are taken on a journey of self-exploration. And like Ari, by the end of it, you are spent. He explains, "When Gerry and I chose the songs for the album, we focused on how they were going to both musically and lyrically connect. I wanted people to hear it and feel like they opened a window into someone's thought process. Someone is drawn to something, a person or an idea of some kind, and there's this ride of emotions that follow - optimism, gratitude, self-sabotage, and eventually a desire to keep it simple and not think so damn much.

Drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical influences, the songs of The Fire Plays fuse the sounds of 70's pop era music akin to Gordon Lightfoot and James Taylor with the sprawling electric guitar soundscapes you'd hear from artist/producers like Ry Cooder and Daniel Lanois. At the forefront is Ari's rugged yet subdued voice which one-time Hest producer Alex Wong described as, "a bear eating honey." Throughout the album, Ari's command of how each song should be sung is striking. He can sound vulnerable, formidable, angry and hopeful, all with an honesty and passion you simply don't hear from most singers these days.

Lyrically speaking, Hest has never been a stranger to revealing the personal, and The Fire Plays is no exception. But unlike some previous efforts, lyrics on The Fire Plays are more easily relatable, perhaps a consequence of Ari's steadfast commitment to improving his songwriting. Hest explores raw emotion the way an archeologist digs for clues to life - with unrestrained excitement. They range from the more abstract, "And as I let them go, water cries for my soul, stripping me down to the bone," from the remorseful "Set In Stone" to the more straightforward but equally powerful refrain, "I play with fire, and the fire plays with me," from the title track.

Though often melancholic, the album also reveals an optimism, as we hear on the fragile-sounding and nostalgic "Concrete Sky": "Someday, I'm gonna cut through to you, and you won't put up a fight," and the playful "Winter of Yes": "And my face is so cold that I tear, but I won't let this be like any old year." Whether light-hearted or dark and intense, Ari's practical lyrics mold seamlessly with his grainy voice and quiet confidence to create an earnest, engaging delivery.

Hest's music has been featured on numerous television shows including Private Practice, Army Wives, and One Tree Hill. He's also scored a film called Dreamriders, which won several independent film awards. And throughout his career, he has toured worldwide relentlessly to support his records, most recently in Israel as well as several European countries, and built the kind of loyal fan base any musician would envy.

While The Fire Plays is an excellent indication of what Hest is capable of, his live show will leave even more of an impression. Watching him play, one can't help but be thrust into his world, hanging on every word like a child listening to a ghost story. Some people smile, some people cry, but everyone at the least stops in their tracks to pay attention.

With The Fire Plays due out November 13, 2012, Ari will again tour to support the album, making stops throughout North America and Europe, as well as Israel and other new territories.

Neil Halstead

BIO: Neil Halstead

One night while in the studio with Neil Halstead a friend questioned him as to what kind of music he played. Neil’s extremely thick beard turned into a smile as he said “Nylon Rock” before laughing and turning back to his beer. I don’t think that description offered any clarity to the asker, but to me it seemed perfect: a self effacing term to help him deal with the fact that he, a former shoegazer, was making a solo record and his main weapon was simply a nylon string guitar and a couple of shakers.

In the late ‘90s Neil fronted a band called Slowdive, and after a couple of really good records they split. From there Neil formed his current band Mojave 3, who have released 4 records to date with a few more to come, we hope. Hard to find 2 bands with more critical accolades, and at the core of those bands was Neil and his songwriting. oh mighty engine is the name of Neil’s newest solo record. It is a record that can handle excessive listens and seems to absorb every mood I have thrown at it. It is really hard to find a record that can make you happy, sad, and can make you laugh all at once. This record does that for me.

The meaning of this record is hard for me to discern, partially because Neil is very English and mumbles phrases like “pithy liner…“or “dangerous dolt…” and other local slang that I have been getting myself caught up with. But the main reason is that Neil has never been blatant or obvious with his words. He writes songs that are very personal to him, and then allows space for everyone to take their own meaning away from his lyrics (“Go skies and thrones and wings. And poetry and things” from the song “Elevenses”).

Neil recorded this record partially at The Solar Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles and the rest in his hometown of Cornwall, England. He surfed in the mornings, and drank beer and recorded with various friends in the evening.

Neil is an old soul and his newest solo record is exactly who he is. Welcoming, warm, clever and kind.

Susan Enan

About: Susan Enan

'Her forlorn, hyper romantic lyrics are what you'd expect from a girl who reads Shakespeare' ~ Rolling Stone

"Plainsong" 8.4/10 - Paste Magazine

"Plainsong" by Susan Enan is included in Paste Magazine's 'Eight Criminally Underrated Albums From 2009' list and listed as one the top 50 albums from 2009 at www.amiestreet.com.

Susan Enan released her debut album 'Plainsong' in 2009. In 2006, while demoing songs for the record, Enan began receiving worldwide attention after her track "Bring On The Wonder" featuring Sarah McLachlan, appeared on the second season of the Fox show Bones. The song was also featured on the shows soundtrack two years later. It took another 6 months to wrap up the record proper which features Enan's remix of "Bring on the Wonder" along with 9 other tracks.

In June 2010 Sarah McLachlan recorded her own version of "Bring On The Wonder" for her seventh studio album Laws of Illusion. Susan is currently embarking on a worldwide house concert tour called "Bring On The Song".

Enan grew up in Cambridgeshire, England. After moving to Liverpool to study music, she began playing the local singer songwriter scene. It was during these years she discovered a love for film scores and the simple, yet intelligent, folk songs of Woody Guthrie.

'What I liked about Woody Guthrie was the reason he wrote and how that informed his writing style. It had to be simple so the political songs could be easily remembered for the sake of the cause, yet the songs where also very smart. I love that combination in art: simplicity that goes right to the soul but doesn't have to bypass the brain on the way.'

After leaving Liverpool she moved to Northern Ireland and continued to write and record a few small EP's released locally, but it was the Moonlight EP (2003) which began to get more attention internationally. It led to an opening slot on a three month US tour with Ohio based band 'Over the Rhine' which in turn led to a signing with Nettwerk Management and a move to New York in 2005. By this time, she had all the songs that would become Plainsong but finishing the record was still a way off.

'Yeah, what with one thing and another it did take time but there were always encouraging signs along the way, like the Bones show picking up 'Bring On The Wonder'. All those things really helped to keep the momentum going.'

The self-produced record was recorded in 5 different countries, much of it in Enan's small home studio in Brooklyn. It was finally released in July 2009 and features co-production from Alan Bezozi, musical appearances from Ashwin Sood (drums), Steve Schiltz (guitars), Graham Maby (bass), and vocal appearances from Declan O'Rouke and Sarah McLachlan. It was mixed in London by Alan Branch and mastered by Jon Astley.

Plainsong is now available both as a digital download and on CD from the online store at www.susanenan.com where Enan and her parents are mailing out the discs from New York and her home village in England.

'BRING ON THE SONG" HOUSE CONCERT TOUR.

In January 2010, Susan decided to take a short vacation to Nashville, TN. Hearing that 'house concerts' were becoming more popular she wrote a post up on Facebook asking if anyone would like her to give a concert in their home while she was in town.

After an overwhelming response from all over the US and further a field, and the success of the show in Nashville, she wondered if it would be possible to travel the world stopping off along the way to give concerts in people's houses, video blogging the journey.

With enough of her fans signing up for the experience she bought a video camera to film the journey and began plotting the routes determind by where the fans lived.

The first stops were in Europe and England in May 2010. in the summer, Susan drove 10,000 miles around North America with the camera gaffer taped to the dashboarfd of a car so she could fim as she travelled. She gave concerts in 22 towns and cities along the way including at a Cathedral in Texas, on a porch in Kansas and on a rooftop overlooking Chicago, beginning the concert at dusk and ending with the moon high over the city skyline. She filmed her adventures; from travelling down the Mississippi, to milking her first cow at the Ohio State Fair and driving through New York City along 42nd Street.

The British tour in the Autumn of that same year was a 3,000 mile trip as far North as Rafford near Inverness, down to Mevagissey in Cornwall. She played 13 houses, 1 inn, and on an air force base, after a squadron leader wanted to a concert there. She travelled through England, Scotland and Wales, down Lochness, through thr Glencoe mountain range, along Hadriend's Wall and over the notorious Hardknott Pass in the Lake District, once again with the video camera taped to the car.

Susan has just finished the tour in Australia and New Zealand, including performing a house concert for one of the communities in Christchurch, which was heavily affected by the recent earthquake that destryoed much of the city.

In April, May and June she returned to Europe starting in Porto, Portugal, travelling through France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and Norway. The final show was 300kms inside the Arctic Circle in Tromso where she fished for cod in a fford and witnessed a rare midnight sun solar eclipse on a mountain overlooking where the house concert would be two nights later.

The next UK/Irish tour began in Scotland on the 29th June and ended just south of Dublin 5 weeks later.

In August 2011 Susan began the last leg traveling around North America again with 34 shows around the country, including two house concerts in Folsom Prison. While there Susan had the privilege of participating in song share; the weekly session where inmates share what they have wrriten whether it be songs, poems or prose. The tour finished in Montclair, New Jersey on the 3rd December.
Although Susan took some much needed time out in 2012 to write, she is back doing house concerts and working on a new album in 2013.

The intimacy of these concerts along with the video blogs accompanying the journey make the "Bring On The Song" worldwide house concert tour a truly unique experience, and the roadtrip of a lifetime.

Wherever you live, if you are interested in hosting a concert please email bringonthesong@susanenan.com

Jack Savoretti

About: Jack Savoretti

With his husky voice, a head full of catchy tunes and a story to tell, Jack Savoretti would seem to have everything it takes.

Yet, just one year ago - with two albums already to his name, a raft of rave reviews, and a legion of fans from five years of solid gigging - Jack was about to pack it all in.

Having left his former label and management, he had become thoroughly disillusioned with the music biz at the age of 27. "I was seriously thinking about giving it all up," he admits. He had just gotten married, had a kid on the way, and hadn't written a song in months.

Then, contemplating his next move last summer, a song came into his head. "I was thinking my career was over before it had really begun. Then this song came along and made me realise I wanted to make another album."

That song, 'Knock Knock,' is one of the 13 self-penned songs that make up 'Before the Storm.' It's Jack's third album, but he sees it as a new beginning. "For me this is like starting all over again. The first two albums came from my imagination, but for this one I have drawn on my personal experience."

The songs on 'Before the Storm' chart a turbulent relationship, and articulate the emotional dilemma of a young man torn between enjoying his freedom and settling down with the love of his life. There are fast songs and slow songs, sad ones and happy ones, songs about wild nights on the town and dark nights of the soul. What they share is the honesty of the lyrics and the catchiness of the tunes.

The son of a Polish-German model, whose own parents had fled the Holocaust, and an Italian actor who fled home to escape terrorist death threats, he grew up in London, Italy and Switzerland. Having spent school days "looking out of the window", he first planned to become a footballer.

Next came a plan to study film in California, prompted by seeing 'The Graduate' at the age of 16, and falling in love with its Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack. That ambition was dramatically thwarted by Jack leaving home on September 11, 2001. "I woke up on a plane halfway across the Atlantic with military jets outside the window and the captain telling us the Pentagon had been hit, and the Twin Towers were no longer standing." Fourteen frightening hours after taking off in Zurich, he was landing in Geneva. "My California dream came to a pretty abrupt end."

When he finally made it to Los Angeles, he found a nation in shock, but fell in love with the city and its music. Encouraged by his mother, who had hung out with Hendrix and the Stones in her modelling years, he picked up a guitar and began to write tunes for the poetry he had written at school.

The outcome was 'Between The Minds', a debut album that showcased Jack's husky voice and knack for a catchy tune. Radio 2 loved it and he was invited to tour Europe with Corinne Bailey Rae, culminating in a gig in front of 9,000 fans at Hammersmith Apollo.

But Jack and his indie label were fighting to be heard against the machine of the industry. "It was just the wrong time for me to try to break through."

A headline tour of Caffe Nero branches around Britain helped generate a buzz about Jack, but his second album, 'Harder than Easy,' failed to reach the audience it deserved when he parted ways with his first label.

Fast-forward to the Spring of 2012 and Jack is in the studio around the corner from his home. Recorded in just four days at KensalTown Studios, 'Before the Storm' is produced by Martin Terefe and The Suppliers, the Scandinavian collective behind a host of hits for artists including James Morrison and Jason Mraz.

"After eight years I have finally found my sound," says Jack. "I feel like this is my first album. The first two felt like my education and my college years, and this feels like my first real job. I sat down and decided I wanted to make a great album, where every song could stand alone and yet be part of a great album. I think we've achieved it. I am very proud of this album."

Phil Common

About: Phil Common

Phil Common has shared stages with Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors and Sony Record's David Poe. His songs have taken numerous mentions and awards in national and international songwriting contests. This growing talent is one to see.

Born and raised in Manhattan, NYC. What time he wasn't playing ball in the streets was spent mostly on stage. Already performing for audiences at 8 years old Phil soon ended up playing at New York's famous CBGB club on a regular basis as well as working on the amazing sound board there. Later he relocated to Chicago where he put Commonhaus together. With this unique hard edge pop band in place, major label interest was quick to follow including Sony records and EMI.

Now back in his home town, Phil is playing and recording his solo works, he released his third independent record, Island, in July of 2011. Now available everywhere!

"It's all too easy to forget the piece you are of all of us." -phil common

Press:

“::SIGH:: It’s like a universal law of the college experience, your heart is gonna get broken sooner or later, and if you’re like me it will probably be more than once, or twice…or three times. ::DOUBLE SIGH:: But I’ve got you covered. Get a box of tissues, put on some Phil Common, and have a good cry. It’s cool guys, your roommate won’t think any different of you… ” Josh the Intern - OurStage.com

“Anyone who’s ever described themselves as a singer-songwriter has written their fair share of melodramatic love songs. But let’s be honest, these songs are often drenched in sappy lyrics and often sound the same. So what’s a hopeless romantic to do? They can start by listening to Phil...” Sam Coren - OurStage.com

“Phil is a ethereal creative force, one that leaves a lasting imprint on all that it touches. Intellectually, his mind and curiosity are infinite. Musically, he is a wizard who's soul is steeped in compassion and humanity.” - Patricia S., Municipal Bond Specialist, LaSalle Financial services, - Internet
