JP Cormier

About: J.P. Cormier

J.P. Cormier appears from the shadows at the side of the stage—an unsmiling mountain of a man in dark glasses—and stalks almost angrily to his seat in the spotlight. He picks up his instrument, adjusts his mic stand and asks the audience: “How’re ya now?” in a rumbling baritone.

Then he starts to tell his story.

His lyrics and melodies illicit every emotion you can muster as he paints picture after picture of loves lost, towns disbanded, fishermen killed by their trade and the most important moments of his own life. His voice is surprisingly sweet and soft-sounding, completely unexpected coming from his 6’4” frame.

He begins an instrumental on one of the five or six instruments he may have on stage with him and you realize that this man is not just a singer or a songwriter. As his fingers fly, with such speed and precision, upon each instrument in turn, you get another picture—one of pure joy and boundless energy; total spiritual abandon bordering in its execution on genius. It’s a word that is used to describe him again and again.

Then just as you think you’ve seen everything, he begins to speak to the audience. He’s more comfortable now. He’s getting over the shyness he feels when meeting new people. Now he feels he can connect safely. Opening up with a few one-liners, he moves on to amusing anecdotes and true tales from his own past. Some bring a roar of laughter from the audience that can be heard outside the theatre, others bring a tear to the eye. He’s home now, his banter is easy as he draws the crowd into each song and tune. The connection is complete and he is one with his audience. Even behind his dark glasses, you can tell that he too sheds a tear when his audience does.

J.P. has a profound effect on audiences, but those who know him know his heart far exceeds his stature. His acts of random kindness in and out of the music industry are legendary. There are many stories of the “big fella” going to play for someone on their deathbed, helping fledgling artists, or generally standing up for people who couldn’t do it for themselves. He spent two weeks in the theatre of war entertaining the NATO troops in Afghanistan and is always quick to do what he can for a good cause. Maritime artists like Dave Gunning, Darren McMullen, Douglas Cameron and many others have benefited from J.P.’s assistance and patient guidance. His charity work is endless, once raising 4 tons of food for Feed Nova Scotia. A man well aware of the plight of the needy, he celebrates his birthday each year with a fundraising concert for Christmas Daddies in Cape Breton.

Accolades for J.P. have come from far and near over the years. He’s been described as “the quintessential Maritime musician” and having “the ability to make the brilliant appear effortless”. His early years playing in Nashville and the southern states have earned him high praise from folks like long time pickin’ partner and collaborator Marty Stuart, who says, “He’s just incredible, one of the best players I’ve ever seen.” Country music legend Waylon Jennings has said, “I would be proud to share the stage with this man anywhere, anytime”, and J.P.’s greatest hero, Chet Atkins has honoured him as “…one of the most important guitarists of his generation.” Closer to home, former Governor General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson proclaimed, “What you have to say as an artist is incredibly important and a treasure to our Nation” and Gordon Lightfoot reveals, “I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Cormier.”

J.P. takes it all in stride.

He still has his ritual three beers before the show, and prefers to be outside the venue where he can smoke and talk to folks as they enter. He’s either there or hanging out backstage with the fans and fellow musicians who show up and don’t feel there’s any reason why they can’t go right back stage and see him. There are no real walls around J.P. and he likes it that way. This may be why he’s stayed so far from the mainstream. He never wanted the barriers that great fame brings between an artist and their audience. The people who listen to J.P.’s music are his lifeline and his inspiration. One man’s simple story might inspire the next great J.P. song. Another’s may be about someone whose life has been changed by something that he wrote or played. He likes to hear about these things first-hand. But if the compliments get too heavy, he’ll just look uncomfortably at the ground and say, “I didn’t write nothin’, I just held the pen.”

With all of that said though, his modesty belies a long list of accomplishments. J.P.’s impressive body of work has earned him a vast and loyal fan base around the world and he has played extensively throughout Canada, Great Britain, Europe, and the USA. His songs have been number 1 hits on American and European radio and he’s won 12 East Coast Music Awards, 5 Music Nova Scotia Awards, and a Canadian Folk Music Award. His album, Another Morning, was nominated for a Juno in 1998 and has since sold nearly 100,000 copies. Performing countless times on television and radio, J.P. released 13 solo albums since 1995 and won more than 30 awards in 20 years of fiddle, guitar, banjo, and song-writing competitions.

In the 30 years since he made his first paycheck at a “Union” gig, going professional at the tender age of 13, he’s traveled hundreds of thousands of miles spending months at a time on the road. It’s no wonder he looks a little tired sometimes!

No matter what you call him–genius, recluse, friend, foe, outgoing, unapproachable, giving, kind, or thoughtful–there is so much more beneath the surface. Celebrated as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, recording artist, teacher, collaborator, innovator, and award winner, J.P. Cormier’s talent is comparable to none. He’s praised in superlatives, but even these don’t do the man justice. The best way to get to know J.P. is to listen to his music. That is where his real heart lies. It is a world where everything is done fairly, no one wants, and there are no broken hearts allowed. In his song “The Messenger” he speaks not from himself but something much greater when he says:

“I am just the Messenger
I speak to every man
Every woman, every child
Who lives upon the land
My face is often hidden
Many do not wish to see
But when you’re in the mirror
Sometimes you look at me.”

J.P. Cormier is not to be missed. Stuff this good only comes around so often

Steafan Hanvey

BIO: Steafan Hanvey

Steafan Hanvey and The HoneyMoon Junkies was released in 2006 in Ireland to critical acclaim.
Steafan Hanvey, originally hails from Downpatrick, Co. Down, in Northern Ireland. A child progeny of traditional musicians (his parents having recorded two albums during the seventies) his exposure to all kinds of music began in utero. Citing influences today from his formative years as being everything from Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Soundgarden, Simon & Garfunkel to Luke Kelly, Willie Nelson, The Johnstons, Paul Brady and Johnny Cash, perhaps the most important of all was the household itself, renowned at the time for its legendary sessions and where it wasn't long before the young Steafan was called upon for a tune or two himself.

In primary school too, his teachers would have him sing to his classmates. It was as a teenager though that Steafan began to explore realms of music other than ballads of immigration, love lost, and blooming heather.

At the age of 16, Steafan formed 50/50, a heavy rock outfit with childhood friends Kenny & Carl Papenfus of Relish. After three years of fronting the band and co-writing the material, sniffs of interest from CBS in Dublin and much frustration with the northern music scene, or apparent lack of, in those days, and indeed lack of venues for original rock bands, Steafan opted to take time out to continue his studies at university.

His third year took him to Seattle where he took the opportunity to study sound engineering. Immersed in the music of the time, producing demos for local bands as part of his course, he was able to witness at close quarters the rise and demise of grunge, culminating in the untimely death of Kurt Cobain. Although an enriching experience at the mixing desk, a certain amount of fatigue set in with the amount of Pearl Jam wannabees on the scene, and the realization hit that he missed what was going on at the other side of the window with the musicians. In the summer of 1995, love and univeristy brought him to Helsinki. Not long into his stay in Helsinki, Steafan began to host his own radio show introducing fresh Irish acts to Finnish ears. (Irkku-aika/Lahi radio)
The mini-album 'Sole' was recorded in November 2000-March 2001, where Steafan finally got to work with Janne Viksten, one of Finland's finest recording engineers, who at the time worked at The Sibelius Music Academy.

Sole, dealt with everyday dilemmas, falling in love, falling on your ass, picking yourself back up, fears, apportioning blame- the usual stuff not in the usual manner. After much gigging in Helsinki and around Finland, Steafan relocated to Dublin.

He got busy recording his forthcoming debut album "Steafan Hanvey and The HoneyMoon Junkies". This saw him team up with old Downpatrick bandmates the Papenfus brothers from Relish. The album was started in Dublin and was finished with sessions in between at studios in Newry, London and Helsinki.

Steafan teamed up with Kieran Lynch to mix the record. Kieran has worked on U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" has also co-produced Elvis Costello's "When I Was Cruel", in other words, he's really very good!

In 2004 Steafan visited NYC and Montreal to get a feel for different audiences. Back in Europe he opened for The Hothouse Flowers in Barcelona in March 2004, played the BelfEst music festival in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and opened for John Spillane, Eleanor McEvoy (Woman's Heart) and The Devlins amongst others at different shows throughout Ireland.

He was 1 of 6 Irish acts invited to play at Boston's NEMO music festival in 2005.
He has recorded 3 in-studio sessions at the BBC and has spent the last 6 years playing all over Ireland, Scandinavia and the USA, laying the groundwork for his debut album release which met with critical acclaim in 2006.

National television and radio appearances followed. The singles 'A Hundred Days of Snow' and 'My Woman' received strong airplay in Finland and in Ireland, making many national radio playlists. A national tour of Ireland followed.

Steafan is gearing up to release his sophomore album entitled "Nuclear Family"- mixed by Swedish producer Tore Johansson, who has also worked with the likes of Martha Wainwright/The Cardigans/New Order and Franz Ferdinand. The record was mastered by Mandy Parnell and features guest appearances by Liam Ó Maonolaí [Hothouse Flowers], Bertrand Belin & Papenfus brothers, Carl & Ken of Relish.

Fuse On Demand, a free Video on Demand service in the USA, that is part of Fuse Music Network and Madison Square Garden Media have recently committed to airing the first single from ‘Nuclear Family’ entitled: ‘Secrets & Lies’ (See below). The song will air later in the year.

BIO: Tiller’s Folly

Tiller’s Folly, are the Pacific Northwest's critically acclaimed, internationally traveled, virtuosic ambassadors of song. For the past sixteen years, through 1,000's of performances stretching from the mists of the Pacific Northwest to the British Isles, they have spread their memorable blend of energy, history, musicality, romance and just plain fun from small and large halls to theatres and festivals. Hailed by critics (“Tiller’s Folly is a national treasure”. – Peter North, Edmonton Journal), their words and melodies are at once populist, minimally produced and poignant while at the same time singularly powerful and sincere.

With eight studio CD's to the bands credit, Tiller's award winning productions continue to expand and refine their potent mix of acoustic & electric based, Celtic influenced Canadiana, Americana, Newgrass 'and beyond.'

In 2008, Tiller's Folly introduced a multimedia component to their show including both modern and archival film footage and photography, adding sharp, captivating visual images and film designed to provide a whole new depth of understanding and enjoyment to an already impressive stage show. As a result, this is a show that the audience will carry with them long after the final note has played.

Fueled by their unfailing passion and enthusiasm for the music, Tiller’s is continuingly experimenting with different phrasing, tones and textures while recording with some of the most exciting and innovative musicians and singers in the business today as they continue to evolve as artists. Names like the phenomenally talented front man of the iconic group NewGrass Revival, John Cowan to Bob Babbitt (most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966–1972, as well as his tenure as part of MFSB for Philadelphia International Records) and the late legendary session keyboardist Larry Knechtel have moved Tiller’s music to a new level of mastery.

Now, in early 2011 they are hard at work again on a new project that marks a fresh, new beginning for the band. In addition to current members Bruce Coughlan, Nolan Murray and Laurence Knight they will again showcase the vocals prowess of the masterful John Cowan, as well as introducing new musical collaborators like Josh Shilling (Mountain Heart) and Cia Cherryholmes (The Cherryholmes) along with the legendary Scottish Music Hall of Famer Phil Cunningham on accordion. Rounding out the musical guests on the album will be guitarist Jeff Autry (John Cowan Band) and banjo great Scott Vestal (John Cowan Band/Sam Bush Band).

With their new self-penned songs, new musical studio partnerships and an inexhaustible collaborative spirit, Tiller’s Folly is poised to breakthrough to the next level in 2011 and beyond

Tiller’s Folly is:

Bruce Coughlan - songwriter, lead vocals. Guitar, bodhran, flute, whistle
Nolan Murray - fiddle, mandolin, mandocaster, banjo, viola, guitar
Laurence Knight - producer, bass, vocals

Figgy Duff

About: Figgy Duff

The 1970's heralded an era of newfound discovery and pride in Newfoundland culture and identity. The Folklore department at M.U.N. was thriving, people stopped being ashamed of the way they spoke, and rebelled against the newfie joke. We were in sync with a roots movement all over the world, as people began to look inward to their own people for inspiration.

Noel Dinn, who had defied all odds and led his 60's rock band, Lukey's Boat, from Newfoundland to Montreal, on to London England, now began to assemble a group of musicians to carry on his vision of greatness, a band that would mingle his incredible powerful rock drumming with the music of the people. This group became Figgy Duff.

But our source of uniqueness and strength was also our obstacle. There was no music industry on this windswept island in the North Atlantic in the 60's and 70's. The energy, courage and determination it took to blaze the Celtic trail across Canada and abroad in the 1970's is utterly astonishing.

In the very early years we traveled what seemed like every square inch of Newfoundland, seeking songs and music from people. We played community halls, clubs, festivals, kitchens, full houses, empty houses, to audiences indifferent, hostile, enraptured. In St. John's we were eyed with suspicion by the folklore set who were re-discovering their uncle's oil skins and boots and cape-anns battened down. We favored velvet and lace, and were vegetarians who smelled strongly of garlic and had a taste of poetry and copious amounts of fine wine. I remember a maze of diner parties with songs, music, laughter, and discussions far into the night of Blake & Yeats and Newfoundland nationalism, with Neil, Nelson, Genevieve, John, Patricia, Anita, Mike, Peter & more. Some of the folk purists were downright outraged that their precious folk music was being tampered with by long haired "urban intellectuals" using drums and amps. But in those years we were measured our success by the joy we brought to the people from whom we learned the music - who instinctively understood that you can't cram a delicate and beautiful modal melody into a three-chord country format.

The road became a way of life. We thought nothing then of picking up and hopping aboard the old Chevy van, perched on and between P.A. speakers, and driving to Toronto and beyond, gone for months on end, picking up gigs as we went. We crisscrossed Canada more times than I care to remember, sometimes on organized, well-paid tours, but more often on a wing and a prayer.

In later years we began to turn our attention more to original music. Noel in particular needed more forms of expression - his poetry and original music were crying for a voice. Times got hard - the record industry was unkind to us. The traditional players fell away to pursue their own interests - Dave formed "Rawlin's Cross" and Kelly and Frank "The Plankerdown Band"' and on July 26, 1993, Noel Dinn passed away. But not before he had accomplished more in his 45 years then most do in a lifetime. In the last two years of his life he produced three albums with ex-members and close friends of "The Duff" - the exquisite "Color of Amber", the joyful and spirited "Vive La Rose" and the dark and poignant "Downstream".

Serundal

About: Serundal

Although Serundal’s first album ‘Transitions’ was only released in 2006, to those who listen to their music everyday it must seem as if an infinite amount of time has passed.

Since that time six full albums and an E.P have been released and all have been enthusiastically received worldwide. Of course the research, writing and re-writing to produce this music has been developing and growing for many years, and like a tender plant each song like a seed has been lovingly nurtured along the way until it was mature enough to face the all the elements of the outside world.

Maxie has been a published poet since the age of fifteen, and Serundal was first born through a combination of her ideas set in poetry and David’s musical creativity. Together, born of Scottish, English and Welsh ancestry they have managed to weave together what has been described as ‘a truly magical mix of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon storytelling traditions with the energy of 21st century musical arrangements’.

Their music has been described as ‘timeless’ ‘cinematic’ and ‘visual’ and since 2007, they have been a featured artist on www.ubl.com and through listeners votes their songs have scored highly in charts like www.songvault.fm (where Serundal was the first artist in the folk genre to have six tracks make it to the top on the songvault directory). ‘Incantation’ (Transitions 2006) and ‘Lady of the Isles’ (Waiting Rooms 2006) are some of the most played tracks in the folk genre on the web. Moonstone (2006) is also currently an editor’s pick at www.cdbaby.com.

Ab Initi (2006) is the first part of the trilogy ‘The Legend of Serundal’ which is a Celtic fantasy legend put to music.

Kray Van Kirk

About: Kray Van Kirk

Calvin once told his tiger Hobbes "I must follow the inscrutable exhortations of my soul", and Joseph Cambell exhorted his readers to "follow your bliss". The Roman poet Horace (and Robin Williams) advised his listeners to harvest the day (carpe diem), and Tennyson sailed an aged Ulysses out from Ithaca once again with the words "...my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset...to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

A rather dramatic bunch, I must say. But correct, in the end.

A few years ago I came across a little book I made in the third grade called "All About Me", in which I said I wanted to be a "singer and a guitar player" when I grew up. In the years since then, I've wanted to be a lot of things, and it seems funny that all of them should serve as stepping stones back to the third grade. I end up quitting graduate school in 1990 (I was studying theology and languages in Berkeley) to run off and play music. I ended up in Jackson, Wyoming, and the Wort Hotel there was the first place I began to play regular shows and actually get paid for doing it. Years before, John Fahey and Leo Kottke had sat together on the same stage, under the same lights, playing music that would shape decades of guitarists. I think that fact intimidated me far more than the audiences!

These days my hair is much shorter and the lines on my face are a bit deeper. I'm a single parent, working on a PhD, and the only way to reach the town in which I live is by air or water; there is no road access. I have a different approach now to writing and performing music. I no longer record CDs; we've got enough things headed for the landfills, and more than enough "stuff". But I also don't charge money for my songs, although a number of people have encouraged me to do so; they are free to anyone who wants to listen to them and give them a home. I used to be so focused on CD sales and the business end of things it took away from the whole point, which is to create music that gives voice to Calvin's exhortations of the soul. So one day I dropped the entire thing.

That's "music without borders, music without cost". We'll see where it all ends up!

I divide my time between Alaska and playing concerts on the road. Every time I finish a new song, I let it sit for a bit, and then it gets recorded and given a home on the music page with all the other little digital penguins, waiting to waddle their way across the world, leaving no footprints in the snow.

Of course, maybe I should get myself a stuffed tiger too.
