JP Cormier

About: J.P. Cormier

J.P. Cormier appears from the shadows at the side of the stage—an unsmiling mountain of a man in dark glasses—and stalks almost angrily to his seat in the spotlight. He picks up his instrument, adjusts his mic stand and asks the audience: “How’re ya now?” in a rumbling baritone.

Then he starts to tell his story.

His lyrics and melodies illicit every emotion you can muster as he paints picture after picture of loves lost, towns disbanded, fishermen killed by their trade and the most important moments of his own life. His voice is surprisingly sweet and soft-sounding, completely unexpected coming from his 6’4” frame.

He begins an instrumental on one of the five or six instruments he may have on stage with him and you realize that this man is not just a singer or a songwriter. As his fingers fly, with such speed and precision, upon each instrument in turn, you get another picture—one of pure joy and boundless energy; total spiritual abandon bordering in its execution on genius. It’s a word that is used to describe him again and again.

Then just as you think you’ve seen everything, he begins to speak to the audience. He’s more comfortable now. He’s getting over the shyness he feels when meeting new people. Now he feels he can connect safely. Opening up with a few one-liners, he moves on to amusing anecdotes and true tales from his own past. Some bring a roar of laughter from the audience that can be heard outside the theatre, others bring a tear to the eye. He’s home now, his banter is easy as he draws the crowd into each song and tune. The connection is complete and he is one with his audience. Even behind his dark glasses, you can tell that he too sheds a tear when his audience does.

J.P. has a profound effect on audiences, but those who know him know his heart far exceeds his stature. His acts of random kindness in and out of the music industry are legendary. There are many stories of the “big fella” going to play for someone on their deathbed, helping fledgling artists, or generally standing up for people who couldn’t do it for themselves. He spent two weeks in the theatre of war entertaining the NATO troops in Afghanistan and is always quick to do what he can for a good cause. Maritime artists like Dave Gunning, Darren McMullen, Douglas Cameron and many others have benefited from J.P.’s assistance and patient guidance. His charity work is endless, once raising 4 tons of food for Feed Nova Scotia. A man well aware of the plight of the needy, he celebrates his birthday each year with a fundraising concert for Christmas Daddies in Cape Breton.

Accolades for J.P. have come from far and near over the years. He’s been described as “the quintessential Maritime musician” and having “the ability to make the brilliant appear effortless”. His early years playing in Nashville and the southern states have earned him high praise from folks like long time pickin’ partner and collaborator Marty Stuart, who says, “He’s just incredible, one of the best players I’ve ever seen.” Country music legend Waylon Jennings has said, “I would be proud to share the stage with this man anywhere, anytime”, and J.P.’s greatest hero, Chet Atkins has honoured him as “…one of the most important guitarists of his generation.” Closer to home, former Governor General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson proclaimed, “What you have to say as an artist is incredibly important and a treasure to our Nation” and Gordon Lightfoot reveals, “I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Cormier.”

J.P. takes it all in stride.

He still has his ritual three beers before the show, and prefers to be outside the venue where he can smoke and talk to folks as they enter. He’s either there or hanging out backstage with the fans and fellow musicians who show up and don’t feel there’s any reason why they can’t go right back stage and see him. There are no real walls around J.P. and he likes it that way. This may be why he’s stayed so far from the mainstream. He never wanted the barriers that great fame brings between an artist and their audience. The people who listen to J.P.’s music are his lifeline and his inspiration. One man’s simple story might inspire the next great J.P. song. Another’s may be about someone whose life has been changed by something that he wrote or played. He likes to hear about these things first-hand. But if the compliments get too heavy, he’ll just look uncomfortably at the ground and say, “I didn’t write nothin’, I just held the pen.”

With all of that said though, his modesty belies a long list of accomplishments. J.P.’s impressive body of work has earned him a vast and loyal fan base around the world and he has played extensively throughout Canada, Great Britain, Europe, and the USA. His songs have been number 1 hits on American and European radio and he’s won 12 East Coast Music Awards, 5 Music Nova Scotia Awards, and a Canadian Folk Music Award. His album, Another Morning, was nominated for a Juno in 1998 and has since sold nearly 100,000 copies. Performing countless times on television and radio, J.P. released 13 solo albums since 1995 and won more than 30 awards in 20 years of fiddle, guitar, banjo, and song-writing competitions.

In the 30 years since he made his first paycheck at a “Union” gig, going professional at the tender age of 13, he’s traveled hundreds of thousands of miles spending months at a time on the road. It’s no wonder he looks a little tired sometimes!

No matter what you call him–genius, recluse, friend, foe, outgoing, unapproachable, giving, kind, or thoughtful–there is so much more beneath the surface. Celebrated as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, recording artist, teacher, collaborator, innovator, and award winner, J.P. Cormier’s talent is comparable to none. He’s praised in superlatives, but even these don’t do the man justice. The best way to get to know J.P. is to listen to his music. That is where his real heart lies. It is a world where everything is done fairly, no one wants, and there are no broken hearts allowed. In his song “The Messenger” he speaks not from himself but something much greater when he says:

“I am just the Messenger
I speak to every man
Every woman, every child
Who lives upon the land
My face is often hidden
Many do not wish to see
But when you’re in the mirror
Sometimes you look at me.”

J.P. Cormier is not to be missed. Stuff this good only comes around so often

BIO: Billy Manzik

Billy Manzik's musical journey began where Highway 61 ends - in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The soundtrack for his upbringing was provided by his guitar slinging, country singing mother, and influenced by any music he could find, not to mention Billy's penchant for wandering the world. The result is a driving roots rock sound, complete with catchy riffs, lyrical hooks and a 'feel-good' toe tapping kind of style. Billy's new release ‘AllTogetherNow’ packages this sound into one beautiful and diverse album, sure to catch the ear of any who hears it. From the anthemic, uptempo lead track 'On A Road' and the sweet harmonies of 'Hannah', to the wailin' bluesy rock of '61 Highway' and the summertime pop sounds of 'Has Been', 'AllTogetherNow' combines musical ingredients so well, it puts the icing on the rock n' roll cake. Recorded at Orange Lounge Studios and Knob and Tube Studios in Toronto and produced by Chris Wardman (The Watchmen, Randy Bachman) with help from David Gavan Baxter (Justin Rutledge), 'Alltogethernow' is music for modern times.

In addition to Billy on vocals and guitar, the album showcases the talents of many well-known Canadian musicians, Geoff Hilhorst (Deep Dark Woods) on keys, Erik Allen (Jenny Whiteley) on drums, Mike Filipowitsch on guitar and Jonny Kerr on bass, plus appearances from many others. Penguin Eggs, Canada's Folk, Roots & World Music Magazine, describes the album as "a powerful roots-rock assault that hits every pop nerve you've ever pumped with proteins." (Eric Thom)
Billy Manzik's music career debuted in Alberta in 2007 with his self-titled release. Recorded at Calgary's Rocky Mountain Studios by producer Rob Smith with Daniel J. Coe (Aerosmith, The Trews), the album featured musical contributions from Canadian roots music greats Tim Williams, Charlie Hase and Bill Zulak (Crash Test Dummies). "Billy Manzik" received critical acclaim, charting on several !earshot charts and being featured on CBC's Key of A. In 2008 Billy showcased at the annual Alberta Sessions (Alberta Music Series), broadcast on CBC's Radio 2, and kicked off the 2008 Juno Awards with a spirited performance at the annual Juno Welcome Reception.

In recent years Billy has played with or opened for such luminaries as Blue Rodeo, Elliott Brood, The Trews, Todd Snider, Colin James, The Wailin' Jennys, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), Cara Luft, among many others.

"Billy Manzik has been a great addition to the Live From the Rock Folk Festival. In addition to being a fine musician he is also a wonderful festival performer...he tells the story behind the song and has a sensibility which enables him to pick the right song for the time and place." ~ Liz Harvey-Foulds, Live From the Rock Folk Festival

"Billy Manzik is a great songwriter, right up there with Steve Earle and Ryan Adams." ~ Michael Murphy, Supervisor, Capitol Mastering

"When I hear Billy play, I want to jump on stage and sing along! Great toe-tappin' music." ~ Cara Luft, Singer/Songwriter (formerly of the Wailin Jenny's)

BIO: Tiller’s Folly

Tiller’s Folly, are the Pacific Northwest's critically acclaimed, internationally traveled, virtuosic ambassadors of song. For the past sixteen years, through 1,000's of performances stretching from the mists of the Pacific Northwest to the British Isles, they have spread their memorable blend of energy, history, musicality, romance and just plain fun from small and large halls to theatres and festivals. Hailed by critics (“Tiller’s Folly is a national treasure”. – Peter North, Edmonton Journal), their words and melodies are at once populist, minimally produced and poignant while at the same time singularly powerful and sincere.

With eight studio CD's to the bands credit, Tiller's award winning productions continue to expand and refine their potent mix of acoustic & electric based, Celtic influenced Canadiana, Americana, Newgrass 'and beyond.'

In 2008, Tiller's Folly introduced a multimedia component to their show including both modern and archival film footage and photography, adding sharp, captivating visual images and film designed to provide a whole new depth of understanding and enjoyment to an already impressive stage show. As a result, this is a show that the audience will carry with them long after the final note has played.

Fueled by their unfailing passion and enthusiasm for the music, Tiller’s is continuingly experimenting with different phrasing, tones and textures while recording with some of the most exciting and innovative musicians and singers in the business today as they continue to evolve as artists. Names like the phenomenally talented front man of the iconic group NewGrass Revival, John Cowan to Bob Babbitt (most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966–1972, as well as his tenure as part of MFSB for Philadelphia International Records) and the late legendary session keyboardist Larry Knechtel have moved Tiller’s music to a new level of mastery.

Now, in early 2011 they are hard at work again on a new project that marks a fresh, new beginning for the band. In addition to current members Bruce Coughlan, Nolan Murray and Laurence Knight they will again showcase the vocals prowess of the masterful John Cowan, as well as introducing new musical collaborators like Josh Shilling (Mountain Heart) and Cia Cherryholmes (The Cherryholmes) along with the legendary Scottish Music Hall of Famer Phil Cunningham on accordion. Rounding out the musical guests on the album will be guitarist Jeff Autry (John Cowan Band) and banjo great Scott Vestal (John Cowan Band/Sam Bush Band).

With their new self-penned songs, new musical studio partnerships and an inexhaustible collaborative spirit, Tiller’s Folly is poised to breakthrough to the next level in 2011 and beyond

Tiller’s Folly is:

Bruce Coughlan - songwriter, lead vocals. Guitar, bodhran, flute, whistle

About: Mountain Heart

The band was formed in 1998 by Steve Gulley, Barry Abernathy, and Jim Van Cleve. Johnny Dowdle was the original bass player. For a short period, Steffey left the band. During that period, Steffey was replaced by mandolinist Alan Perdue. After their debut album, Dowdle left the group, and was replaced by former James King bass player Jason Moore. After Steffey's return to the group, Mountain Heart added virtuoso guitarist Clay Jones to the lineup. In December 2006, the band announced that Steve Gulley would be leaving the group. On January 5, 2007, Josh Shilling debuted with the band at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN, and was announced as the group's new lead singer. The group received and astounding standing ovation on the famous Opry stage after Shilling sang one of his original songs. In September of that year, Jones was replaced by Grammy Award winning guitarist, Clay Hess. In December 2007, mandolinist Aaron Ramsey replaced Steffey, making his debut in Shilling fashion on the stage of The Grand Ole Opry. Clay Jones returned replacing Hess in January 2009, joining the band again at the Ark in Ann Arbor, the site of their 2007 (live) recording. Mountain Heart had been with the Skaggs Family Records label since 2002, but signed with Rural Rhythm Records out of Los Angeles, CA for a single record deal. They released their first live recording, entitled Road That Never Ends. This album has been critically acclaimed and highly sought after. A music video for Road That Never Ends was produced by Josh Shilling and landed the group a spot in heavy rotation on GAC and CMT.

Since 2007, Mountain Heart has been on tour with acts such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Punch Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Travis Tritt, Levon Helm, John Fogerty, Tony Rice, and many many more. After playing the Grand Ole Opry over 125 times, winning dozens of awards and legions of fans across the country, and assembling what is considered one of the strongest groups of musicians in acoustic music or any genre, in 2010, Mountain Heart decided to open their own record label. MH Music Group was born and their first ever self-produced/released project "That Just Happened" hit store shelves in the Fall of 2010. The album, which features guests like New Grass Revival front man & current Doobie Brother bassist John Cowan, legendary session drummer Eddie Bayers and guitar whiz Bryan Sutton received high praise from critics, even scoring a prestigious Four Star rating from Country Weekly Magazine.

In January 2012 the band welcomed into the group Seth Taylor, an eighteen year old guitar prodigy who has won numerous awards and shared the stage with the likes of Charlie Daniels and his mentor, Brad Paisley. In his second week with the band Seth got to share the stage two nights in a row with one of his guitar heroes, Tony Rice when Mountain Heart shared back to back dates with him in Georgia.

Mountain Heart has grown from a traditional bluegrass into a group that critics describe as "acoustic overdrive" and simply can't say enough about. Hints of rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, country, and even classical music appears on stage every night these days. Mountain Heart is continuing to pave the way for musicians and music lovers across the world.

Old Crow Medicine Show

About: Old Crow Medicine Show

Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) have come full circle playing their own brand of American roots music with a rock and roll attitude. They met in New York in 1998 and hit the road, traveling city to city in a van and busking in the streets. They eventually settled for a year in North Carolina, where they ran into a bit of good fortune while playing in front of a local pharmacy to an impressed Doc Watson; the folk icon promptly scheduled the band to play at his MerleFest.

Soon after, OCMS relocated to Nashville and found themselves gracing the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, touring with Merle Haggard and regularly appearing on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. OCMS can attribute much of their success to their relentless touring schedule. Between headlining shows and countless festivals, the band is constantly on the road and thrives off of their fans and live shows. They have made a name for themselves as energetic performers with an unbridled spirit. Combined, their albums have gone on to sell over 500,000 units.

The Clumsy Lovers

BIO: The Clumsy Lovers

The Clumsy Lovers have brought their mix of fiddle and banjo-fuelled, bluegrassified Celtic rock to North American audiences for over a decade. With more than 2500 performances under their belts, their high-energy shows have worn out dance floors and created a loyal following in 49 states and across their homeland of Canada.

In addition to their live shows, The Clumsy Lovers have also released a series of award-winning and critically acclaimed recordings. Early self-produced recordings garnered the attention of venerated label Nettwerk Records, which came on board to release “After The Flood” (2005) and “Smart Kid” (2006). Both albums won a CD of the year nod from the Indie Acoustic Music awards, as well as being nominated for numerous other honors (including multiple mentions from The West Coast Music Awards, and the Canadian Folk Music Awards).

In 2010 the Clumsy Lovers released “Make Yourself Known”, a 13-song collection showcasing the band’s penchant for mixing styles. From bluegrass rave-ups to pop-rock sing-a-longs, this album brings the Lovers live show energy to your living room.

But the Clumsy Lovers are still, first and foremost, a live band. Their spontaneous forays into musical mayhem can only be experienced in person, and after years of relentless touring the Lovers feel most at home on a stage.

“Their fusion of bluegrass and celtic with a rock attitude is the soundtrack for a kinetic show that has helped the band become a favorite of the roots music crowd” – San Antonio Express-News

“Buckle up for a ride on a crazed, banjo-driven folk rock bus, from the fiddle-tastic band that release After The Flood comes a high-energy, toe-tappin’ soiree that promises to please.” – Boulder Weekly

“Some people see this Vancouver combo as a messed-up bluegrass band. Others see a messed-up Celtic group. Still others see a messed-up rock band. With a little something for everybody, the one consistent element the Lovers bring to every show is a riotous good time. Blending all the aforementioned influences into a ripsnortin’ and rootsy performance, these guys (and girl) are absolute road dogs and it shows in their powerful live shows.” — Orlando Weekly
